Cyber Mission-2

Cyber Mission is the Department of Defense's interactive recruiting platform for cybersecurity careers — a game-based experience under the Today's Military umbrella, built to put high schoolers and college students through the same kinds of problem-solving challenges a real military cyberspecialist faces, then point the ones who are good at it toward a recruiter. By the time Mullen brought me on in 2021, the platform was established but its performance had plateaued. I led creative and design direction on the engagement to modernize the experience and rebuild the campaign driving people into it.

ROLE: Creative & Design Director

YEAR: 2020

DISCIPLINE:

Cyber Mission

Creative direction team leadership UX/experience design Campaign/integrated strategy

CLIENT:  U.S. Department of Defense — Today's Military / JAMRS

17% more link-offs to contact a recruiter

THE ASK:

14x more link-offs to Today's Military

46% more engagement with gameplay

The game itself — built around Protect, Defend, and Strike challenges, plus an Ultimate Challenge for players who cleared every level — was sound, and its visual identity didn't need reinventing. The problem was structural: the layout and flow had aged, and the path from "played the game" to "talked to a recruiter" was losing people at nearly every step. My job was to close that gap — redesign the structure and layout of the experience, and build a social campaign strong enough to bring the right audience to it in the first place.

Cyber Mission was a reminder that a strong platform can still lose people to a structure that's fighting the goal. It didn't need a new look — it needed a design team willing to rebuild how it was laid out, and a campaign smart enough to get the right people to it.

MY ROLE:

As creative and design director, I directed the information architecture and layout redesign of the site — the structural work that reshaped how users moved from gameplay to action — plus the social campaign built around it. I set the direction, led the design team through execution, and stayed close to strategy and development so both workstreams were pointed at the same outcome: more of the right students finding the game, playing it, and taking the next step toward a cyber career
